Carolina Hernandez finished in second place and was elated when she learned she had won the gold medal at the USATF Junior Olympic National Championship in Houston. Hernandez had walked the fastest race of her life among 23 of the top ten-year-old girls in the country. She finished her race three seconds behind Lana Bernardez of New Jersey. However, Bernardez and four other girls were disqualified for having violated one of the two rules in race walking — lifting — which is defined as running.
