Area News Coffee with the Mayor
The safety and security of our Pharr children has always been of utmost priority to us as Pharr city leaders. That is why when a facility in South Pharr – the Pharr Boys and Girls Club gymnasium - did not meet our standards, we had no choice but to suspend use of the facility until the situation could be remedied by the organization’s leadership. To date, the necessary upgrades have yet to be done. So, the City of Pharr decided to take action.
At a special called city commission meeting held this week, the City of Pharr announced that it has unilaterally begun undertaking the necessary improvements to repair and upgrade of the Pharr Boys and Girls Club gym located at 302 E. Las Milpas Road in Pharr. The city had allowed the Boys and Girls Club and its leadership nearly one year to complete the required upgrades to bring the facility into compliance, and to date, repairs have not been done by their own accord. The city decided to take this proactive step in response to our citizens’ requests to bring the gymnasium into compliance so that our Pharr children that attend could safely utilize the facility. Most recently, the club again requested another extension, until March 15, 2019, to complete the work. This request was denied by the City of Pharr. The request was unreasonable, as it failed to give the priority to this matter that our citizens deserve. Therefore, the city decided to step in and will immediately make the repairs itself as quickly as possible to get our community, and our Pharr children, back into a safe and usable building.
