SAN JUAN – Maria Nora Velasquez, 68, died Monday, September 5, 2016, in Houston. Born in Mission, she had lived in San Juan most of her life. She is preceded in death by her husband, Rogelio G. Velasquez; her parents, Marcos and Juanita Mercado; two sisters, Sylvia Serna and Maria Eugenia Perez. Mrs. Velasquez is survived by six children, Marcela (Moises) Martinez, Melinda (Rafael) Robles, Michelle (Jesus) Castillo, Rolando (Lyza) Escobar, all of San Juan, Maricela (German Robles) Velasquez of Alamo, Maricruz Velasquez of Houston; 16 grandchildren; 14 greatgrandchildren; six siblings, Marcos Mercado of San Isidro, Ruben Mercado, Juanita Mercado, both of Grand Prairie, Maria Julia Mercado, Elizabeth Mercado, both of Mission, Norma Linda Mercado of Michigan. Visitation was held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Thursday, Sept. 8, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service took place at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan. Cremation took place at Memorial Cremation Center in Edinburg. Interment of cremated remains took place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at San Juan Cemetery. Funeral services were under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
