Sheriff’s campaign commander pleads guilty to taking a bribe

Well, thanks to Jose “Joe” Padilla’s guilty plea last week in federal court in McAllen, we can now paint a clearer picture of just how the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department was operating under former sheriff, Lupe Treviño. Padilla, 54, was taking bribes from an alleged drug dealer based out of Weslaco, Tomas “El Gallo” Gonzalez, in both 2011 and 2012.
