The Right to be Crazy

By Tom Haughey

Every now and then we're reminded of mistakes we made in the second half of the 20th Century. Yes, we did some things right. We kept South Korea free. We embraced the civil rights movement and ushered blacks and Hispanics into fields of endeavor previously closed to them. We opened the doors of higher education as never before to minorities and saw black actors formerly relegated to rolls as servants and the source of comic relief become leading men and women in Hollywood. That's the up side and it is truly significant.
