We Can't Escape the Markets
By Tom Haughey
Sunday evening I watched Lew Dobbs' Special examining what was happening in China and its likely effect on the Dow and Nasdaq. The predictions ranged from mild optimism to gloom and doom depending on who was talking. All in all the best the participants could guess was that if the Chinese government propped up their own stock market overnight and it rebounded from its early Monday losses of seven percent, our markets would be down a couple hundred points at the opening bell. They could not say, however, when our markets would hit bottom. One expert predicted a rapid recovery and a bull market for years to come. Another predicted a total collapse that would see the Dow drop from over 16,000 down to around 5,800.
