The State of the County: Good, Bad, or Ugly?

Former McAllen Mayor Richard Cortez, now new county judge, is in the Honeymoon phase now. Most things between him and the four county precinct commissioners are going along well. After all, he’s only been on the job now as Hidalgo County Judge since Jan. 1. Hardly enough time to completely survey the land, so to speak, or butt heads with the commissioners.

There are those living in this county who are happy with the status quo, while others are not.

Question is, on which side will Cortez fall? Will he agree with the present course of the county? Or if he decides he doesn’t agree with it, can he chip away at the commission majority; can he still use his bully pulpit to speak out during commission meetings to explain why the majority precinct chairs are wrong if they vote a certain way?
