There are widespread demonstrations in the streets of Hong Kong this week because China has gone back on its word and replaced its Two China Policy (under which it received Hong Kong from the British) with a fake democracy under which all candidates for Hong Kong office have to be selected by Beijing. Meanwhile China is also claiming numerous islands owned or claimed by Vietnam, Japan, and/or the Philippines. It wants the oil under the sea near those islands. In one case it actually positioned an oil platform and started drilling before retiring under pressure. Since Japan has a very limited military, the Philippines next to none, and Vietnam has only the leftovers from its war with the U. S., China feels very much in the mood to bully. Speaking of bullies, Putin has thousands of troops on Ukrainian soil while making fake charges of brutality against Ukraine for its treatment of phony separatists whose actual home address is Moscow. and who were in reality the vanguard of the Russian invasion. He has already stolen the Crimea and has designs on much of the rest of the country. Meanwhile NATO dithers and speaks of sanctions. Only the head of Lithuania has openly talked of sending military aid. Putin can get away with being a bully because only France and the UK, of all the NATO countries have spent the minimum 2 % of their budget as they have agreed in support of their military. Putin looks with disdain on NATO because he knows a paper tiger when he sees one. The roar doesn’t bother him a bit.
