Former DA, incumbent DA square off

After winning approximately 64 percent of the vote to unseat Rene Guerra as Hidalgo County DA four years ago, it was hard to imagine Ricardo Rodriguez losing this time around in last week’s Democratic Primary. Turned out, in this year’s primary, the count wasn’t even close, with Rodriguez capturing close to 80 percent (78.5) of the 45,208 votes cast. Call it a big uptick vs. the 2014 race.
No one but Guerra will really know why he chose to run again and risk such a huge deficit in the final vote tally: 35,490 ballots cast for Rodriguez; 9,718 ballots cast for Guerra. Maybe it was because he had successfully won eight consecutive races since his first DA campaign kicked into
