ROBERTO LUGO

DONNA - Roberto Lugo, 79, a loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away Friday, March 10, 2017 at McAllen Nursing Center. Mr. Lugo was born June 25, 1937 in Donna, Tx., son of Juan Pablo Lugo and Guadalupe Cantu Lugo. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Beatriz Lugo and his brother Alfredo Lugo. Mr. Lugo is survived by his wife, Virginia Ann Elevario Lugo; sons, David (Vivian) Lugo, Robert (Lisa) Lugo Jr., John Paul (Georgina) Lugo; brothers, Juan Lugo Jr., Rogelio Lugo, Joe Lugo, Frank Lugo; sisters, Lydia Jimenez and Maria Luisa Hernandez Also surviving him are 13 grandchildren. Mr. Lugo proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He had the distinct honor of serving as the City of Donna’s first Hispanic mayor during the 1970s and . He also served as a member of the Donna City Council, Donna Lion’s Club, Donna Jaycees and both the Donna and Weslaco Chambers of Commerce. He also served in the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council. In 2010, he was inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Walk of Fame. He was also an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and its chapter of Knights of Columbus. Visitation will be held Sunday, March 12, 2017 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Donna. Interment will follow at Val Verde Memorial Gardens. Military graveside services will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #7473 in Elsa, Tx. Funeral services are under the direction of Hawkins Funeral Home in Donna.
