Pharr builds apartments, expands housing
By G. Romero Wendorf
PHARR -- In the case of Pharr’s efforts to build a relatively huge new 288-unit apartment complex on the southeast corner of Jackson Road and Sioux Road, it would be fair to call City Commissioner Edmund Maldonado the lone man out. Of the six commissioners and mayor who lead the city, he’s the only one who opposes the approximate $35 million apartment project, which the city commission voted to approve May 23rd.
Last Monday’s vote was actually 5-0. Commissioner Ricardo Medina was out of town on city business, and Maldonado had personal business to which he had to attend.
Reached by phone last week, however, Medina said he would have voted in favor of the project had he been in attendance. Just the opposite of Maldonado’s take on the project.
