Last week I listened with interest to the debate in the British House of Commons about whether or not the UK should bomb the Islamic State in Syria. Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, and UKIP favored the campaign as a show of unity with France. Labor (with the exception of sixty dissenters) and the Scottish National Party opposed the action as being a dangerous escalation which would likely produce more terror attacks at home in the UK. The Prime Minister came in for considerable criticism for making the unfortunate statement a day earlier that those opposing the bombing of IS were terror sympathizers. In the end, of course, the bombing was approved with a hundred votes to spare.
