San Juan City Commission boots mayor, former mayor from EDC

New municipal judge contract ready to sign

SAN JUAN -- Yep, this year is an election year – two commission seats up for grabs – and we’re not yet into February, three months before the May election, and things are already starting to heat up. At last week’s city commission meeting, a 3-2 vote removed both the current and former mayor from the San Juan EDC: Mario Garza and Pedro Contreras, respectively.

Mayor Pro-Tem Pete Garcia, and commissioners “Neto” Guajardo and “Jesse” Ramirez voted in favor of the change. Mayor Mario Garza and Commissioner “Lenny” Sanchez opposed the change. The commissioner who put it on the city agenda, however, Jesse Ramirez, said he placed it there for two reasons, none of which had to do with politics.

“I thought the EDC meetings should not take place right before the city commission meetings: one at 5:30, and one at 6:30. If the EDC meeting ran long, the city commission meeting would start late, and some city staff would have to stay late.”

Ramirez said he didn’t know the city commission would choose him as one of the two EDC board-member replacements, but had high hopes it would be him.
