McAllen runoff set for March 3rd

McALLEN – If you think McAllen’s Jan. 20, 2018 election for District 1 – the winner will replace Richard Cortez, who is running for county judge – was abysmal (only approximately 10 percent bothered to vote), San Antonio is even worse. In the Alamo City’s mayoral elections in 2011, only approximately 7 percent of registered voters cast a ballot. In 2015, in another mayoral race, approximately 12 percent of registered voters voted, making McAllen’s District 1 runoff look large in comparison, relatively speaking.
The McAllen special election resulted in a runoff between Javier Villalobos and Tim Wilkins, because neither captured the necessary 50 percent plus 1 required to tip the scales. Villalobos won 505 votes (37 percent); Wilkins, 472 votes (35 percent); and Joseph Caporusso, 28 percent (approximately 380 votes).
