SAN JUAN – Hector Treviño was born on July 24, 1924, in Rayones, Nuevo Leon, Mexico and had lived in San Juan, Texas all of his adult life. Having been diagnosed with prostate cancer on February 11, 2014, he was seen by Dr. Nelson Mata and other physicians from Doctors Hospital at Renaissance. He received home services from Amara Hospice for four days, and passed to be with the Lord on July 20, 2014. Thinking back to his months of illness, he demonstrated great strength and perseverance as he did throughout his life. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Manuela de la Fuente; and two sisters, Aurora Ortiz-Treviño and Emma Treviño-de la Fuente. Hector is lovingly survived by three sons, Hector (Maria Ninfa) Treviño of Pharr, Joe G. (Anna) Treviño and Juan Gaspar (Maggie) Treviño, both of McAllen; four daughters, Dr. Maria Luisa (Rene) Guerra of Edinburg, Doricela (Jesse) Howell, Diana (Glenn) Conrad, and Rosalinda (Scott) Le Blanc, all of San Antonio, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Hector spent most of his childhood in Rayones, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. He attended elementary school in his hometown and during the Mexican Revolution left to Montemorelos, Nuevo Leon, Mexico to help his uncle, Rodrigo manage the Mayoreo business where items such as farm equipment, fabrics for clothing, and groceries were sold. As a young 18-year-old, he crossed the Rio Grande River to enlist in the Army Reserves in the Rio Grande Valley. During the 1950’s and 1960’s he worked in the cotton gin owned by Carl Schuster. Although he had limited formal education, he was a “mechanical engineer” having worked his way up from a “sorvedor de algodon” to gin machine mechanic expert, and then to gin foreman where he supervised a crew of men. His knowledge of all aspects of the operating of the gin took him to Tennessee, where he was hired for two weeks during his vacation time to repair a similar gin. Soon after the cotton era ended, Hector was employed by Pharr-San Juan-Alamo I.S.D. as an hourly wage employee assigned to do maintenance work such as roofing construction, and then served as janitor and groundsman for the Special Education Department. P-SJ-A honored Hector as “Employee of the Year” and in 2001 was also honored in recognition of his 21 years of service. Mrs. Dolores Singleterry remembers him as a hardworking, kind, respectful, and polite employee who loved to bring them sweet bread and fresh vegetables. God gave us Hector to serve as an example of human strength and faith in our Lord. He served as a volunteer at the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan Del Valle-National Shrine where he assisted in the Sunday masses with the distribution of bulletins, the collections, and special events such as the annual Jamaica. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Wednesday, July 23, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. The Funeral Mass in Latin by Father Jose Losoya will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church at 505 South Ironwood St. Pharr, Texas. Hector will be honored by his grandsons as pallbearers: Johnathan Treviño, Mark Anthony Treviño, CJ Treviño, Lewis Howell, Bryan Howell, and Luis Guerra. Daniel Le Blanc will serve as honorary pallbearer. Hector will be buried at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens, 4607 North Sugar Rd. Pharr, Texas. The song “Amazing Grace” will be performed with bagpipers. Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
