Supe says adios
By G. Romero Wendorf
For those who say this story is one-sided, let it be said, The Advance News Journal left a message with McAllen ISD Superintendent Dr. James Ponce’s office this week after he announced his retirement, seeking comment, but our call wasn’t returned.
Ponce’s record of returning media calls has never been good. So his failure to return this latest call came as no real surprise. Nothing personal with The Advance. The reporters tied to other media outlets I spoke with following the retirement announcement said the same thing – very hard man to ever get through to over the phone.
The only time James Ponce was readily available to the media was when he was trying to hard sell that $297 million bond last year, which failed miserably. Approximately 70 percent of McAllen voters said no to the bond, which took down two incumbent trustees with it. The only incumbent left standing, Danny Vela, was fortunate enough to run un-opposed.
