Judicial campaigns full of lawyer $$$

There are, however, some good judges

By G. Romero Wendorf

I’d joke that some judge presiding in Hidalgo County paid me to write this column, maybe gifted me a new shotgun, but someone might take me seriously.

After writing last week’s front page Observations column concerning county judges, it dawned on me that I painted Hidalgo County’s judicial system with too broad of a brush when it came to incompetent and/or biased judges. I should have included this disclaimer in that column:

Some of the judges working the bench in Hidalgo County, in fact, do their best to do a good job, and work hard at not letting campaign dollars influence their courtroom decisions. After all, not all the judges are influenced by campaign dollars or law firms who host huge fundraisers for them. Not all of them only work half a day, four days a week.
