IDEA principal saga

I was going to write this week’s column solely about politiqueras, but then got sidetracked, wondering why the IDEA Public Schools chose to keep one of its principals (IDEA Quest in Edinburg) on staff last year after a county grand jury indicted him and his brother with “assault with a deadly weapon.”
The two-count felony grand jury indictment claims that the principal, Jose Luis De Leon, who was 40 at the time of his arrest, grabbed an off-duty cop in a choke hold from behind while his brother smashed a beer bottle against the side of the officer’s face. Both then allegedly assaulted a bouncer inside the North 10th Street bar where the brawl went down last June 6th.
De Leon got out on a thousand-dollar personal recognizance bond, and then IDEA’s CEO, Tom Torkelson, went to work
