The seventh Republican debate may well have been a watershed moment in the campaign for the Republican nomination. Until that time Ted was the only candidate that (according to Ted) was a consistent conservative. He based that largely on his position concerning illegal immigration. Rand Paul also saw himself as the only consistent conservative based upon fiscal policy and the necessity to balance the budget by economizing everywhere (including national defense). Since most voters are more hawkish than Rand, Ted seemed to carry that Mr. Conservative mantle.-- until the debate.
