Send Someone to Jail

I was looking through old stored papers this week deciding what to keep (and what to throw out) when I came upon a 1999 letter to me from the Federal Election Commission. It was their final response to a protest I’d lodged the previous year about a candidate that I believed had stretched a couple of campaign laws to the breaking point. It involved allegedly raising campaign donations at the candidate’s corporate offices and (also allegedly) a bank pressuring Mexican customers to contribute to said campaign. The election commission’s lawyer had earlier declared that it appeared I had a valid point. The Federal Election Commission under a Democrat administration, however, consisted of three Democrat commissioners and two Republicans. Not surprisingly, the commission’s ruling went 3 to 2 against my complaint.
