Last Sunday Shiite militiamen and the Iraqi military retook the town of Jurf al-Sakhar, about thirty miles south of Baghdad. Islamic State terrorists did not fare well in that battle. Those who were captured were interrogated (beaten senseless) and then shot in the head. One of the militia leaders justified the action by noting how many of his men had been killed in the battle and what atrocities the Islamic State fighters had committed on the population in the months they controlled the town. It appears that surrender will not be an option for either side in this war. Islamic State leaders committed a grave error when they established the policy of slaughtering their prisoners. As Reverend Jeremiah Wright would say, “Their chickens have come home to roost.” This may very well be the most brutal war since World War II Russian soldiers avenged the death of millions as they closed in on Berlin. They pillaged, raped, and killed Nazis on sight while stealing water faucets because they thought that would provide them with running water back in their home villages. Ignorance and anger are a dangerous combination.
