The Disunited Kingdom?

The Sunday Times of London has commissioned a number of YouGov polls concerning the upcoming vote on Scottish independence. At the beginning of August the poll indicated a 22 point lead for those wanting Scotland to remain a part of the United Kingdom. In the middle of August the lead had dropped to 14 points. At the start of September it was a mere 6 points. This week the poll for the first time showed 51% of Scottish voters favoring independence with only 49% wanting to stay in the union. As a result of the most recent poll the British pound took a hit. I have watched the debates between Alex Salmond, head of the Scottish National Party, and those favoring Scotland remaining part of the United Kingdom, and I can tell you that this is not a fight over business policy or national defense or tourism. It is, rather, the patriotic fervor of Braveheart against the reasoned approach of the establishment. It appears to be a tossup as to who will win. Mr. Salmond has not done particularly well in the debates.
