A few centuries ago Galileo invented a 1000X telescope and looked at the heavens. He saw the moons of Jupiter and confirmed that Copernicus' idea of a century earlier was correct. The planets, including Earth, revolved around the sun. Other scholastics at the University of Padua refused to even look through his telescope. Then the Catholic Church became involved and an inquisition council demanded that Galileo either renounce his heresy or go to jail. He renounced but then wrote a book about his studies a decade later and once again faced the inquisition.
