MERCEDES G. VALDEZ

SAN JUAN – Mercedes G. Valdez, 81, of San Juan passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2019.

She was born on September 25, 1937, in Hualahuises, NL, Mexico, and she lived in San Juan for over 60 years.

Mercedes is survived by her children Berta (Andres + ) Martinez, Santiago (Silvia) Valdez, Sandra (Lauro) Luera, Rosalva (Jesus) Liscano, Jose (Traci + ) Valdez, Diana Valdez; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Florentino Valdez; her sons, Humberto and Carlos Valdez; her parents and five siblings.

Mercedes was a housewife, mother, and babysitter for many years. She loved caring for her plants early in the morning and will always be remembered for her delicious Mexican cooking. Mercedes babysat many children over the years and all of them called her “Wela” even if they weren’t related. She was a Dallas Cowboys fan. Mercedes loved seeing her grandkids grow-up and loved playing with her great-grandkids. Everyone who knew Mercedes will remember her unselfish, giving, and helpful personality. She was always ready to help anyone that needed her.

Viewing was held on Thursday, January 3, 2019, from 5:00-9:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan with the rosary to be prayed at 7:00 PM. Funeral service took place Friday, January 4, 2019, at 10:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in San Juan. Interment followed at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens on Sugar Road in Pharr.

Pallbearers were Vicente Martinez, Andres Martinez Jr., Lauro Luera III, Joe Michael Luera, Humberto Valdez, Carlos Valdez, and Robert Liscano.

Funeral services were under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
