Vela Sabercats escape determined RGC Rattler upset bid 21-20

A missed extra point with seven seconds remaining proved to be decisive as the Edinburg Vela Sabercats barely overcame a determined upset bid by the Rio Grande City Rattlers with a 21-20 triumph in a District 31-5A battle at Rio Grande City Thursday night. The Sabercats trailed the entire game before scoring two fourth quarter touchdowns to take a 21-14 lead with just under five minutes remaining. The tenacious Rattlers responded with an 81-yard scoring drive, connecting with a fourth down 15-yard scoring pass with seven seconds left. The Rattlers lined up to try a two-point conversion, but a procedure penalty moved them back to the 8. They then tried to kick the tying extra point, and many observers and fans initially thought the kick was good. There was considerable confusion as it became known that the kick had been ruled unsuccessful.
