Russia historically knows how to weaponize cold weather. It was weather and a scorched earth policy that beat both Napoleon and Hitler. In the current era it’s cold weather that Russia uses to intimidate both Eastern and Western Europe. Russia knows how to make the West shiver.

When, after the Olympics, Russia took over Crimea, the talk was that Putin wanted a warm water port, That may have been part of the equation, but the rest of it was that Crimea has abundant, as yet untapped, oil and gas reserves. Russia is actively seeking a monopoly on European fossil fuel. That’s also the reason why Ukraine remains in danger. It has both reserves and a pipeline.
