Wife of former city attorney wants $300k; City counters with offer of $5,000

PHARR -- To call this court-ordered mediation that took up half a day last Thursday a deep monetary divide would indeed be an understatement when discussing this proposed lawsuit settlement: $300.000 vs. $5,000?

Someone’s missing two digits. The lawsuit dates back to an incident that occurred Feb. 24, 2012, outside the Oratory Academy in Pharr (private Catholic school), when either a Pharr off-duty police officer hurt Pharr resident Laura Ramirez, or Ramirez hurt the officer, depending on which party is telling the tale. Following the incident, both parties sought medical attention.

The initial mediation talks between the two parties last Thursday, according to a confidential source who would agree to speak to The Advance only on condition of anonymity, was even more divided. Ramirez’s attorney, Daniel Ramirez (no relation), was initially asking for $350,000 to drop the lawsuit; while the city countered with its own offer: $1,000.
