Pharr Interchange Project – TxDOT Public Meeting
The Rio Grande Valley continues to grow at an astronomical rate. We have especially felt this growth in Hidalgo County, where we expect to hit a population of over 1 million before the 2020 census—and in all likelihood, we already have. Along with the need for more housing and community services, among others, is the dire need for improved roadways and transportation. Not only are our roadways used by our citizens to get from home to school to work, but with a booming trade industry and international corridors, we are in the epicenter of a bustling economy that relies on transportation around the clock.
As the Mayor of Pharr, one of the most popular comments I get from citizens is ‘when are you all going to do something about that interchange.’ While the I-2 and I-69C interchange were originally developed and constructed to suit a smaller population, there is no doubt that it no longer meets the needs of our growing population and in fact, it has become a source of frustration for many who travel through the area daily, as it becomes a bottleneck for traffic due to its restrictive one-lane access.
