McALLEN – When former McAllen ISD Superintendent James Ponce announced his sudden resignation in February to take a job with a Dallasbased charter organization, there was a rumor floating around among district staff that the “fix” was in: Ponce’s right-hand man, Associate Superintendent Jose “Jay” Gonzalez, would end up filling his predecessor’s shoes.
In other words, McAllen ISD can, if it so chooses, interview all the qualified applicants who may apply for the job, but it will just be a waste of their time. The board majority already has its man. And his name is Dr. Jose Gonzalez.
