Here’s something hard to imagine today: prior to the creation of the U.S. Border Patrol in 1924, the U.S./Mexico border was left, for the most part, unguarded — people from both countries free to pass back and forth without interruption. The Immigration Act of 1924, along with increased federal resources aimed at enforcing alcohol prohibition, put an end to that little bit of freedom and liberty.
