Former priest back in court
By G. Romero Wendorf
EDINBURG -- Oscar Rene Flores, the lead defense attorney for former Catholic Priest John Feit, 83, who stands accused of the brutal 1960 murder of 25-year-old McAllen Teacher Irene Garza, surprised most court watchers last Tuesday when he didn’t ask 92nd state District Court Judge Luis Singleterry for a reduction in the million-dollar cash-surety bond he had set during the accused murderer’s initial arraignment March 14th. Turned out, bond reduction wasn’t the reason for Feit’s court appearance.
Instead of asking for a bond reduction last Tuesday, Flores asked the judge to grant a motion that would allow the former priest’s legal team to inspect two locations – the rectory at McAllen’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the pastoral house in San Juan next to the shrine.
Both locations are expected to surface during court testimony once the case makes it to trial.
