If you want to get a pretty good idea as to how far the RGV’s produce industry has sunk over the past 20 years, ever since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) went into force Jan. 1, 1994, former Farmer O.E. Brand Jr. has a pretty good way to quantify it. “When I came back to the Valley from college in the early ‘70s, there were between 250 and 300 packing sheds down here. Today? A dozen or less, I’d say.”
