Pope visits Mexico
By G. Romero Wendorf
Last Monday, another Mexican journalist was kidnapped and tortured and murdered by presumed drug cartel assassins (sicarios) near the city of Orizaba, Veracruz. The body of Reporter Anabel Flores Salazar was found the following day dumped on the side of the road, her blouse pulled up, her pants pulled down, in the typical sign of disrespect that’s become a symbol of such killings.
What makes the killing of Flores particularly horrific, was that she was nursing her 15-day-old baby when more than eight armed men dressed up in military gear forced their way into her home, aimed assault weapons at her family, said they had a warrant for her arrest, and then pushed her into a truck and sped away into the night.
Since the ascension of Javier Duarte Ochoa to the governor’s office in 2010, the murder of Reporter Flores marks the approximate 14th killing of working journalists in that state. That’s just one state.
