UTRGV SIGNS LOCAL ATHLETES

The World of Sports

EDINBURG - The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley this summer signed six area athletes - from PSJA North, McAllen Memorial, Weslaco, Mission and Edinburg Vela - to its NCAA Division I Track & Field program.

The local haul was only part of 18 that UTRGV Track & Field Coach Darren Flowers inked recently to fill spots on a team that has been on the rise since Flowers' arrival two seasons ago. Last spring, Vaqueros' men and women's teams both finished fourth at the WAC Track and Field Championships, earned five titles and sent seven athletes to the NCAA West regionals.

Leveraging that momentum and already having found success with several other RGV athletes, Flowers and UTRGV continue to find runners, jumpers and throwers in area and beyond. In this group, the state of Texas was also represented well with athletes from cities such as Lubbock, Dallas and Laredo.
