Traps, Plans, and Conflicts of Interest
It strikes me that President Trump would be unwise to sit down with Robert Mueller to answer his questions. One question in particular comes to mind: “Did your son tell you in advance about the Trump Tower meeting with the woman from Russia?” Michael Cohen has already (as part of his efforts to avoid prosecution) alleged the son told the Donald about the upcoming meeting. President Trump says he had no prior knowledge. He has not made that statement, however, before Congress or law enforcement. Don Junior, on the other hand, has made a similar declaration in sworn testimony before a congressional committee.
If the P resident answers Mueller by repeating what he’s said to the press, then Mueller will accuse him (based on Cohen’s testimony) of lying to the FBI. If he answers that he did know, then he’s guaranteeing his son will be prosecuted for lying to a congressional committee. If he pulls a Hillary and claims he can’t remember, then the press will attack him for being senile. In that interview the cards will be stacked against him, and he can’t win. The only way to come out on top is to refuse the interview.
