Perversion of Justice
The United States may well be the only developed and civilized country in the world that allows the uncorroborated testimony of an alleged co-conspirator to be used as evidence to convict someone. In theory, certain parts of the testimony need to be backed with facts, but those facts may well be documents or events open to broad and divergent interpretations.
The way it works is that a prosecutor chooses an acquaintance of his target and charges that person with anything he wants to. The person then hires a lawyer and spends money to defend himself until his legal expenses drive him into bankruptcy. The prosecutor then offers to go easy on him IF he gives the desired testimony against the person the prosecutor is really after. If the acquaintance continues to balk, then the prosecutor threatens to file charges against another family member and put him or her in jail.
