The Caravans
As I walked across the border bridge from Nuevo Progreso last week I noticed brand new (very tall) chain link fence gates midway across the bridge at the actual border with Mexico. The gate along the walkway was pressed against the outer wall of the bridge. A second gate on the other side of the walkway could be closed to cut off vehicle traffic. A third gate was in place on the other side of the bridge to control pedestrian traffic in the other direction. Two border patrol officers were standing next to the gate along the footpath I was traveling. I turned to them and commented that I saw they had the gates in place to stop the caravans. They didn’t answer.
