Hey, the drug dealers will tell us the truth
After the recent federal guilty verdict in the case of the two San Juan cops, other Valley cops are no doubt going to be asking themselves this question if federal agents want to sit down for an interview: “Should I just shut up and hire a good lawyer? Or cooperate?”
When I first started covering the federal courthouse beat back in 1988, I remember sitting through some drug-trafficking cases and thinking to myself, the guy that the feds just put on the stand to swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, is a bigger dirt bag than the guy(s) the feds are trying to send to prison. What gives? The drug dealers on the witness stand, however, had agreed to snitch, so now they were considered people whose word the jurors could trust. As far as the feds were concerned, sure, they were drug dealers, but they were “their” drug dealers.
