Raul Garza, of Edinburg, died Friday, at the age of 90. Mr. Garza lived in Edinburg and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. during World War II where he served in the South Pacific and was at Iwo Jima when the U.S. flag was raised. Mr. Garza was employed by the United States Postal Service and retired at age 60 after 35 years of service. He is preceded in death by his wife, Berta Garza; two brothers; and a sister. Mr. Garza is survived by four children, Yolanda Iris Garza, R.Ph., of Edinburg, Leticia (Anthony) Covacevich, of Weslaco, Elizabertha (George) Simo, Ph.D., of Lyford and Raul «Danny» Garza, of Edinburg; nine grandchildren, Iris Elizabeth Tellier, of Perth, Australia, Aissa Foyt, of Fort Worth, Anthony Christopher Covacevich, of Washington, DC, Maria Cristina Covacevich and Andres Raul Covacevich, both of Weslaco, George Alfred Simo and Matthew Alban Simo, both of Houston, Albert Raul Simo, of Hutto and Issa Daniele Garza, of Edinburg; and by three greatgrandchildren, Nicholas Andrew Covacevich, Kassidy Simo and Emily Simo. Visitation was held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary on Sunday, at Memorial Funeral Home, in Edinburg. Funeral service took place at 1 p.m. Monday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg. Pallbearers were his five grandsons and a nephew, Jaime Eduardo Garza. Military honors were conducted by VFW Post 8788 of McAllen. Funeral services were under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
