MAYOR RODOLFO “RUDY” VILLARREAL
ALAMO – Mayor Rodolfo “Rudy” Villarreal, 83, died Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Edinburg.
Born in Alamo, he had lived there all of his life and was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church. He was baptized in 1935 and had his first communion in 1945 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Alamo. Rudy retired from the United States Navy after serving during the Korean Conflict and serving six tours in Vietnam with 24 years of service. He served as Mayor of Alamo for 24 years.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Oralia T. Villarreal; a grandson, Arturo E. Garcia III; a granddaughter, Lisa Marie Salazar; parents, Macario and Ines Villarreal and three siblings, Roberto C. Villarreal, Rene Villarreal and Albesa Gomez.
Rudy is survived by eight children, Diana Gutierrez of Alamo, Irene Gonzalez of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, Monica Crossman, Sylvia I. Villarreal, Patty Villarreal, all of Alamo, Rod Villarreal of McAllen, Norma Villarreal (Orlando) Robles, Rene (Paula) Villarreal, both of Alamo; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Amalia Villarreal of Alamo, Alicia Rodriguez of Kress, Texas.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held from 3 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Thursday, April 12, at Resurrection Catholic Church in Alamo. Funeral service took place at 10 a.m. Friday, April 13, at Resurrection Catholic Church in Alamo. Interment followed at St. Joseph Cemetery in Alamo. Military honors were conducted by VFW Post 8788 of McAllen. Pallbearers were his grandsons, Rick Escalon, Mathew Crossman, Eric Banda, Michael Villarreal, Brandon De Leon and Jacob Olivo. Honorary Pallbearers were Andrew Robles and Aaron Villarreal.
Funeral services were under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
