A sad note from last week – Pharr’s longtime former city secretary, Dora Garza, passed away. I got to know her starting about 1982 during the “Cuate” Barrera administration, and how fast those 32 years have flown by. The ironic thing about Dora was that she was a no-nonsense person who didn’t suffer fools gladly. I admire that in a person. They want the simple truth. Say what you mean. Mean what you say. And then she ends up working most of her entire adult life in city government, dealing with the public, not to mention how many politicians and disgruntled residents over the years? Along the way, Dora was always kind and even tempered. Even when she didn’t like somebody, she wouldn’t let it show.
