Brennan and Manafort
James Brennan is livid because the President has pulled his security clearance. Interestingly, so are a slew of other former government officials. Why? The answer is simple. A top secret security clearance is worth big bucks. There are only about five thousand people who have it, and private industries (in order to do business with government (as defense contractors, etc.) need people on their staffs who are able to receive restricted information. Former officials, therefore, view their lifetime security clearance as an important perk. It can result in a five or even six figure income.
From the government’s standpoint, however, only former officials who are occasionally called in as advisers need to maintain such a clearance. The status was never intended to be a perk. What’s more, former employees giving to lying to Congress (as Brennan did) or accusing the President of treason (as Brennan also did) may be wrongly believed because they have a security status which allows them to view documents withheld from the general public.
