By the time you read this column, the Hidalgo County district attorney’s race will have already been decided. Either Rene Guerra is set to start his 32nd year as DA, or his challenger, former state District Judge Ricardo Rodriguez will take his place next Jan. 1. Was money a factor? Depends who wins. If Rodriguez wins, the argument can be made, yes, outspending your opponent can swing a race and beat a longtime incumbent. Guerra will spend close to $160,000 by the time everything is said and done. Rodriguez, a little more than three times that.
