The last abortion provider in the Rio Grande Valley shut its doors last week. Depending on your politics and/or your brand of religion, that’s either a good thing or a bad thing. It also depends on whether or not you happen to be a woman in dire straits. Let’s say, you have five kids, no money, an abusive husband who came home nine weeks ago and had his way with you even though you told him to stop, you didn’t want any more kids, please use a condom. (You’d been on the pill, but the state cut its family planning budget.) With whiskey on his breath, your husband laughed, threw you on the mattress, and now here you are, pregnant with child number six. The rest of your kids are ages 10, 8, 6, 4 and 2. One is physically handicapped.
