Trump's Speech

By Tom Haughey

Donald Trump's acceptance speech last Thursday evening was one of the most carefully crafted speeches that I've ever heard. The fair trade portion was clearly designed to woo union members who want to see a return of manufacturing to our shores. We have lost a third of our manufacturing jobs since the 1990s and that has hit the trade union movement hard. He also had his eyes on those Sanders voters who backed Bernie because of his vow to reenergize manufacturing (rather than because he was a socialist). Trump also spoke scathingly about corporations who had left the country to fabricate in China or elsewhere without any repercussions. It's plain that he would place a tariff on goods sent back to the United States from those factories.
