The number of hermaphrodite children born in the United States is not known. The best estimate, however, is between three one hundredths and five one hundredth of one percent. Most of them are operated upon as infants to remove the genitalia of one sex or the other. The number of individuals, therefore, who reach elementary school age while retaining both male and female sex organs is infinitesimal. These people have civil rights based upon their sexual actual identity.
