HARGILL - Max Kendall Pollock passed away on Thursday, April 21, at the age of 83. Max was born in Harlingen, Texas on June 4, 1932 to Jack Beall Pollock and Pansy Ruth Nattinger. His most cherished memories from his younger days were the times he spent with his grandparents, Walter and Lena Holt, on the Ratamosa Ranch north of Hargill on Highway 186. Max attended elementary school in La Sara, Texas, junior high school in Mercedes, Texas and high school in Asherton, Texas and also spent one year of college at Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas and one year at Pan American College in Edinburg. While in high school, he was a top athlete, excelling in all sports and was a State Doubles Tennis Champion and State Champion Typist. While at Sul Ross, Max played in a Country and Western Band and was friends with Hoss Cartwright of Bonanza. Max served in the United States Navy from 1952-1956 aboard the USS Cimarron (A022) and was stationed in San Diego, California. While in the Navy he played in a Country and Western Band that would perform in the Captain’s Quarters for the Captain. He met Margie Joyce Haley in 1956 and they were married on October 25, 1958 and built their lives in Hargill; they were married for 57 years. He worked at the Pollock Dairy in Hargill in the 60’s and was a Citrus Farmer in the Hargill area from 1956 to the early 80’s. Max was an avid deer hunter who waited all year for the first day of deer season, loved the old country music singers and songs, and could sing and play with the best of them, and was a faithful member of the Hargill First Baptist Church. His greatest love was for his family; family was everything to Max.
Max leaves his wife of 58 years, Margie Joyce Pollock, and four daughters, Yvonne Ruth De La Vina (Rick), Yvette Irene Rodriguez (Alex), Kellye Lynee’ Ortega (Sal), all of Edinburg, and Sandy Pollock (Michael Lovitt) of Austin. Max – Pop as his 7 grandkids lovingly called him – leaves Margaret Irene De La Vina Reyna (Bobby), Myrhanda Camille Ortega, Champ De La Vina, Mykaelah Corin Ortega, John Thomas Rodriguez, David Alex Rodriguez, and Myrhissa Calen Ortega. Max also leaves his beloved Cocker Spaniel – Hoots. Max is preceded in death by his parents, Jack Beall Pollock and Pansy Ruth Nattinger, James A. Nattinger; a brother, Keith Beall Pollock; and a niece, Rita Yvonne Sprayberry. Pall Bearers are his grandsons, Champ De La Vina, John Thomas Rodriguez and David Alex Rodriguez, his son-in-laws, Rick De La Vina, Sal Ortega, Alex Rodriguez and Michael Lovitt and his great friend, Powell Haley. Honorary pall bearers were his nephews, Roy Dwayne Pollock, Jack Kendall Pollock, and Hoyt Byron Pollock. Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service Sunday, April 24, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Graveside service took place at 10 a.m. Monday, April 25, at Valle De La Paz Cemetery in Hargill. Funeral services were under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
