During last week's primaries voters in four states were asked in exit polls if they would consider a third party candidate if this year's presidential race turned out to be between Trump and Hillary. Forty percent said they would. If that happened and they all voted for the same person, that candidate would be elected and we'd end up with a third major party. Admittedly such a consensus is unlikely, but fear of wasting a vote would not appear to be a factor. Fully four in ten seem to feel that a vote for either the republican or democrat would be the waste.
