Violence south of the border:

Hidalgo County one of safest counties in state, says sheriff

How to convince or eduate people from out of the area that all the news they hear, see, or read about border violence isn’t applicable to the Rio Grande Valley in general, or Hidalgo County in particular? Who knows. Bad news sells. Good news gets overlooked.

According to the latest data released by the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, which compares violent crimes and property crimes year to year, 2018 to 2017, the combined drop in crime is close to 10 percent: a 9.58-percent drop to be exact.

“(Too many) people don’t realize that (this side of the border) is safe. It’s our neighbors to the south that have a lot of crime. Here, it’s one of the safest areas in the state,” said Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra, whose great-grandfather was once sheriff of Starr County (1904).
