Sick of negative, depressing news
During my lifetime, I don’t think I’ve ever seen our country in such a mess. My kids are grown, but it’s my grandkids I worry about. What a world they have to face. People call it Fake News. I call it Negative News. Granted, newspapers have to report the good and the bad, but it sure seems like the bad is outweighing the good by at least a 10-1 margin. That includes the local news, the state news, the national news, and the international news. When even the NFL has become politicized, we know we’re in a mell of a hess. Professional sports used to be a refuge from the real world, but no mas.
Syndicated writer Pat Buchanan has a column this week comparing 2018 to 1968, asking if America is worse off today. He doesn’t believe so, despite citing some of the major events that occurred 50 years ago: The Navy ship Pueblo hijacked by North Korea; the Tet Offensive in Viet Nam where approximately 10,000 U.S. troops died that year; the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy; the riots at the Democratic Convention in Chicago, just to name some major horrors that year.
Me, I think America is in worse shape as a society now than we were 50 years ago. Americans are at each other’s throats more now than in 1968, in my opinion. Social media only fuels the flames of hate and discord.
Anyway, next week, the front page will return to the real world of news. Don’t worry. There is enough negative news to go around, so stay tuned.
